Reviving the Historic Textilfabrik with AI: Cloud NYNE & Studio Calas’ Digital Collaboration

The 19th-century Textilfabrik Hirschbach, once a thriving knitwear factory, now stands as a sleeping giant of heritage awaiting its next chapter. Through digital innovation, its rich history is meeting a cutting-edge future.

In the northern Waldviertel region of Austria, an abandoned textile factory in Hirschbach captured the imagination of architects Barbara Calas-Reiberger and David Calas of Studio Calas. This imposing brick-and-stone mill – originally built in the late 19th century and expanded before World War I – served as a cooperative for home weavers and later a knitwear factory. In its final act, it produced socks and gloves for the Austrian army until its closure in 1966. For decades, the “Textilfabrik” (textile factory) sat quiet, its 800 m² of interior space (from factory floors to former living quarters and even stables) waiting to be rediscovered. Now, Studio Calas has a bold vision to restore and repurpose this historic structure – opening it up for community use, creative workspaces, and even housing, all while respecting its heritage.

Bringing a 150-year-old building back to life, however, comes with challenges. How do you plan a modern renovation in a complex, aging structure with irregular geometry and scant existing drawings? This is where Cloud NYNE stepped in. Studio Calas reached out to Cloud NYNE with a crucial task: transform a detailed laser point cloud scan of the Textilfabrik into an accurate, usable Building Information Model (BIM).

From Raw Point Clouds to a Usable BIM

Studio Calas provided us with raw laser scans containing millions of data points captured at the Textilfabrik. Traditionally, turning these points into usable architectural plans demands considerable time and effort. At Cloud NYNE, our AI-powered platform drastically accelerates this process, automatically identifying and modeling key architectural elements from point clouds.

Within days, our system generated a foundational BIM (Building Information Model) containing all automatically recognizable elements. To fulfill Studio Calas’ precise needs—especially the complex roof structure—our BIM specialists collaborated closely with the architects. This iterative process ensured the resulting ArchiCAD model perfectly aligned with the studio’s planning objectives.

Real-Life Usability Meets Digital Precision

At Cloud NYNE, we understand that professionals need models that are not only accurate but practically usable. For architects and planners, native BIM files in tools like ArchiCAD mean immediate, seamless integration into their workflow. Unlike simplified IFC files, native formats offer direct and intuitive usability, streamlining design and planning phases significantly.

For Studio Calas, this meant a robust digital twin they could trust, enabling them to confidently explore design possibilities for the Textilfabrik’s revival.

Collaboration as the Key

The success of this project rested on smooth, close communication between Cloud NYNE and Studio Calas. Regular exchange ensured the BIM model matched the architects’ vision and practical needs precisely. The collaboration was positive, dynamic, and productive—exactly what we strive for at Cloud NYNE.

Towards a Sustainable Future

This project encapsulates our broader mission at Cloud NYNE: to effortlessly create BIM models of every building on Earth, fostering sustainable renovation and informed decision-making. By digitally documenting the Textilfabrik, we’ve not only provided a practical tool for Studio Calas but also contributed to preserving architectural heritage for future generations.

Through digitization, historic structures like the Textilfabrik can continue inspiring communities, balancing past and future gracefully and sustainably.
